Jacob Appel of New York City, has won New Millennium Writings’ $1,000 Fiction Prize for Invasive Species, the story of a dying girl’s ventures into the afterworld, as her mother struggles with love and loss. Acclaimed novelist Allen Wier, who judged the contest, wrote: “The characters in ‘Invasive Species’ are larger-than-life and totally compelling; they are so fresh and vividly made that they have merged with my life. The language is richly textured, the details are totally convincing, and the tone is near-perfect. I've not read a more inventive story in a long while. This juxtaposition of myth and reality will haunt readers in many lovely ways.”

Maureen O'Brien, of West Hartford, CT, won our $1,000 Poetry Prize for her poem, Incoming Wounded. In the words of our poetry judge, American Book Award winner Pamela Uschuk, this is "a powerful poem that rises from the ashes of the personal in an archetypal, universal way. This poem is filled with indelible imagery. The last eight lines are dynamite, heartbreaking, as Tsvetayeva said, 'Bullets that go straight to the heart.' This poem captures not only the tragedy of our current historical era. It is a fierce statement for all times."

Hope Ewing of New York City, won the $1,000 Short-Short Fiction Prize the story, Bolero, the story of a dancer past her prime, who can no longer convince herself there’s glory in managing the dance troupe. While listening to Ravel, she muses on fate, meter, time, and destiny, as she takes the G train home. The language is rich, rhythmic and choreographed.

JLSchneider of Ellenville, New York won the $1,000 Nonfiction Prize for his essay, The Empty Road, an essay/memoir about his adventures hitchhiking before such sojourns became deeply suspect in American culture. Rich in episodic adventure, lyrical evocations of landscape and insights into human nature, Schneider's story wanders anew literary byways pioneered by Steinbeck, Kerouac, Least Heat Moon, Jack London and others who answered the call of the road.
